Caldwell Knocks Off No. 18 Women's Soccer, 3-2
Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 15, 2012) – The Caldwell Cougars scored three second half goals to stun No. 18 LIU Post, 3-2, in a non-conference women's soccer contest on Saturday afternoon at Robert Blitz Field.
The Pioneers suffer their first loss of the season as they now stand at 4-1-1, while Caldwell improves to 4-2.
The hosts took an early lead in the contest as freshman
Susanne Vistnes (Randaberg, Norway) headed a shot right at the Caldwell goalkeeper, and the ball deflected off her right to freshman
Hanna Westerling (Alvadalen, Sweden) who knocked it into the left corner for a 1-0 lead.
With the Pioneers firmly in control of the pace in the first half, they peppered the Caldwell goal with shots, and doubled their lead to 2-0 when junior
Lauren Bischoff (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) out maneuvered several Cougar defenders and slid a pass along the top of the goal box to
Prudence Rydstrom (Islip, N.Y.), who created some space and sent a shot into the upper right corner.
But despite a 20-2 first half deficit on the shot chart, the Cougars came out aggressively in the second half and began to posess the ball more effectively. In the 52nd minute, Sarina Soriano scored on a corner as she deflected a shot into the left corner.
The Cougars tied the game at 57:47 as a Pioneer foul awarded the Cougars a kick at just over 20 yards outside the net, and Jackie Crankshaw stepped up a sent a perfectly placed shot into the upper left shelf.
With both teams vying for possession at midfield, it was the Cougars who were able to finally capitalize, as a long cross from midfield bounced off several players before Julie Crankshaw was finally able to knock it home for the go-ahead goal.
The Pioneers tried valiantly to score the equalizer but were denied by several saves from Caldwell keeper Kristina Cabales, who notched 12 stops on the day. Senior goalkeeper
Nicole Fierro (East Hampton, N.Y.) turned away four shots for the Pioneers.
