Purple Knights Slide Past Women's Basketball, 72-66

BRIDGEPORT, CONN. (Jan. 26, 2013) – Despite opening the game on a 7-0 run, the LIU Post women's basketball team dropped an East Coast Conference road match-up at the University of Bridgeport with the final score being 72-66.
LIU Post slips to 12-5 and 5-4 in the ECC, while Bridgeport improves to 12-6 and 7-3 in conference action.
The Pioneers opened the game with seven unanswered points before the Purple Knights tied the game at 10 with 14:37 left in the half. Bridgeport's Tanisha Carter hit a jumper to take the lead for the first time, but
Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) drained a trey shortly after to regain the lead for LIU Post. Some back-and-forth action followed with the score remaining close before the Purple Knights pulled ahead after enjoying a 12-0 run. A
Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) layup cut the Bridgeport lead to four with 26 seconds left in the half. The scoreboard read 34-30 in favor of the Purple Knights going into halftime. Peters led the scoring in the half, registering 10 points, 2 assists, and four rebounds. Marciniak chipped in six points and six boards.
The second half was all Purple Knights, as the Pioneers could not pull closer than six points the entire half.
Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) drained a three-pointer with two seconds left in the game, but it was too little too late for the Pioneers as they trailed Bridgeport 72-66 as time expired.
Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) scored 10 points in the second half for the Pioneers, and Marciniak added eight.
Williams finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Peters and Marciniak each added 14. Marciniak finished with her second straight double-double by pulling in 10 boards, and Peters grabbed nine off the glass.
Tanisha Carter led four Purple Knights in double-digits on the afternoon, scoring 23 points.
The Pioneers return home Wednesday, Jan. 30 as they host ECC rival Dowling College at 5 p.m.
