Women's Soccer Ends Regular Season With 1-0 Loss at Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2013) - On Saturday, It was a 74th-minute tally by Queens sophomore forward Nicolette Scrozzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) that secured a 1-0 victory versus the LIU Post women's soccer team at the Knights' Soccer Field in Flushing, N.Y. The loss rounds out the regular season for the Pioneers at 13-4 overall, and 6-3 in the ECC.
In the opening 45-minute stanza, Queens controlled play, doubling up LIU Post in shots, 6-3, and earning a penalty kick. With 7:19 left, senior midfielder Kristina Ikonomou (Commack, N.Y.) stepped up to the spot, but her try was stopped by freshman goalkeeper Hreffie Agnarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland), who made five saves. That would keep the contest scoreless at the intermission.
During the latter period, the Pioneers had the first scoring opportunity five-plus minutes in. However, sophomore forward Susanne Vistnes' (Randaberg, Norway) attempt struck the crossbar.
The Knights would finally break the stalemate in the 74th minute. A flick pass into the box by Lisa Cassata (Massapequa, N.Y.) set up the game-winning shot, which was planted inside the near post, by Scrozzo.
For the match, Queens (11-5-1, 6-3 ECC) owned a 10-7 edge in shots, and an 8-6 edge in corner kicks. Four of LIU Post's corners occurred in the final 6:36, as the visitors looked to score the equalizer.
Head Coach Mark Dawson and the Pioneers now await word on a potential bid to the ECC Women's Soccer Championship. The four-team bracket is scheduled to be released Monday.
