Women's Basketball Falls to No. 1 Bentley, 71-59
Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 21, 2013) - The LIU Post women's basketball team got a 24-point effort from senior guard
Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) on Saturday, but it wasn't enough as the Pioneers fell to top-ranked Bentley, 71-59, in non-conference play at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville, N.Y.
The two teams played a tightly contested game for the first five-plus minutes of action. The Pioneers (5-4) got within one at 14-13 when Peters drained a three with 14:31 to go in the opening half. The Falcons (11-0) then turned up the pressure and ran away from their opposition, outscoring the green and gold by a 21-5 count from that point on. Bentley took a 35-18 advantage into the break.
The Pioneers came out of the break looking to get back in it, as they opened up the second half on an 8-3 run to get within 39-26, which started and ended with a lay-up from senior forward
Shayna Gatling (Baldwin, N.Y.). However, LIU Post never got closer than that until the 2:23 mark when Peters hit a three to get within 12 (66-54).
Peters led all players with her 24 points off 8-of-19 shooting from the field, including a 3-of-4 clip from three-point territory. Gatling was the only other player to score in double figures for LIU Post with 11.
For Bentley, Jen Gemma picked up a double-double, posting a 20-point, 12-rebound effort.
Head Coach
Deirdre Moore and the Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, January 4, 2014, when they host Assumption in a non-conference contest at the Pratt Recreation Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
