Women's Basketball Beats NYIT, 66-57, In ECC Opener

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 3, 2013) - The LIU Post women's basketball team came away with a 66-57 win over neighboring NYIT in the green and gold's first East Coast Conference contest of the season at the Pratt Recreation Center on Tuesday night.

Senior guard Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) paced the Pioneers with 15 points, her third-straight game in double figures. Fellow senior guard Kiki Sears (Hampton, Va.) added 14 points of her own. Senior center Nijah LaCourt (Bronx, N.Y.) hauled in a career-high 14 rebounds, as the Pioneers bested the Bears on the boards, 64-47.

With the win, the Pioneers improved to 3-2 overall, including a 1-0 mark in ECC play. NYIT fell to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in conference tilts.

With the score tied at 9-up with 14:09 to go in the first half, Shannon Duer hit a free throw to give the Bears a one-point lead. NYIT spent less than a minute on top, as LIU Post rattled off a 15-4 run to go ahead 24-14. Junior guard Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) led the Pioneers during the run with eight points over 6:20 of play.

The Pioneers would take a 32-25 advantage into the break. Sears led the green and gold in the opening stanza with eight points, while senior forward Shayna Gatling (Baldwin, N.Y.) chipped in seven.

In the second half, neither team could score early, as NYIT scored the half's first points at the 16:51 mark. The Pioneers got on the board when senior forward Dominique Pagan (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a jumper to put LIU Post back up by six at 34-28.

The Bears answered though with four unanswered points to get within two at 34-32 with 12:29 remaining in regulation. But, the Pioneers turned up the offense, and went on a 12-5 run to open a nine-point lead at 46-37. Peters had six points during the run that spanned four minutes.

After NYIT got within five at 46-41 on a lay-up from Julie Williams with 7:36 to play, the Pioneers fired back with a 12-4 run to break the game open at 58-45 with 3:55 to go. Sears led the Pioneers with five points in the game-clinching burst.

Head Coach Deirdre Moore and her LIU Post squad return to the hardwood Saturday (Dec. 7) at District of Columbia in Washington, D.C. The opening tip is slated for 1 p.m.
