WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 13, 2013) – The LIU Post women's basketball team ended its two game skid with a 79-65 win at East Coast Conference foe the University of the District of Columbia Wednesday evening.

LIU Post improves to 15-7 on the season including 8-6 in conference play. The Firebirds slip to 8-16 overall and 3-11 in ECC action.

The Pioneers opened the game with a 10-3 spurt behind two consecutive layups by Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) followed by two three-pointers by Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.). The Firebirds were able to cut the lead to one at the 14:10 mark, but the Pioneers called a timeout and turned the game back in their favor.  An Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) trey with 31 seconds left in the half gave the Pioneers their largest lead of the half at 14 points.  The Pioneers held a 38-24 advantage going into the intermission.

The Pioneers held the double digit advantage for most of the second half, with the lead dipping to nine points just twice during the final 20 minutes of play.  They held their largest lead at the 13:59 mark with the score 50-32.  Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) converted an untraditional three point play after making a layup while being fouled and followed with a made free-throw to put her squad up by 18.  The Pioneers once again held an 18 point advantage when Peters drained a jumper off a feed from Kenyatta Sears (Hampton, Va.) with 6:27 left to play.

Five Pioneers finished the game with double digit point totals with Williams leading the way with 17 including shooting 4-4 from downtown.  Caggiano was right behind her with 15 points and 3-4 made three-pointers.  Marciniak finished with her seventh double-double of the season, registering 14 points and 15 rebounds.  Sears and Peters finished with 13 and 12, respectively.

The Firebirds' Denikka Brent finished with a game-high 19 points.

The Pioneers shot 54.2% (26-48) from field goal range, including 60.0% (9-15) from beyond the arc.  They out-rebounded the Firebirds 44-27 and registered 20 assists on 26 made field goals.

Next up for the Pioneers is a trip to Mercy College on Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. matchup.
