Women's Basketball Keeps Mercy Winless, 83-56

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (February 16, 2013) – Four scorers in double figures led the LIU Post women's basketball team to a 83-56 victory on the road at Mercy College on Saturday afternoon in East Coast Conference women's basketball action.
The Pioneers improve to 16-7 overall and 9-6 in ECC play, while Mercy remains winless at 0-23 overall and 0-15 on the conference slate.
The Pioneers started out hot as they opened with 13 straight points before Mercy even got on the board, and with 13:12 on the clock, Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) nailed a three-pointer to put the visitors ahead 19-9. However, the Mavericks climbed back into the game to take a 24-23 lead with 8:37 to go in the half. Back-to-back layups by senior Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) righted the ship and put the Pioneers on top 27-24, and the Pioneers quickly ran their lead back into double digits before taking a nine-point advantage into halftime.
Opening up the second half, the Mavericks cut the lead to five (41-36) at 17:36, but the Pioneers used a 15-4 run to extend their lead to 16 points with 14:39 to play. From that point on, the Pioneers took total control of the game, pushing the lead into the twenties and leading by as many as 29 points, 77-48, at 5:38, before ending the contest with a 27-point advantage.
Leading the charge for the Pioneers was Marciniak with 19 points on a solid 8-11 showing from the floor. Junior Shayna Gatling (Baldwin, N.Y.) scored 15 points with nine rebounds, and Williams added 14 points, while junior Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) chipped in with 11 points.
Aysha Williams led the Mavericks with 21 points.
The Pioneers shot 42.4% from the floor, despite a season-low 3-20 from long range. They were bolstered by a 57-37 rebounding advantage.
Next up on the slate for the Pioneers is a home contest versus the Saint Thomas Aquinas Spartans, on Wednesday, Feb. 20 starting at 5 p.m.
