Softball Drops Two in Florida Action

KISSIMME, Fla. (March 11, 2013) – The LIU Post softball team dropped a pair on contests on Monday morning at the Rebel Games, losing 6-2 to Minnesota State-Mankato and falling by an 11-9, nine inning decision to Southwest Minnesota State.
On the season, the Pioneers sport a 3-2 record overall.
In game one, the Mavericks took a 2-0 lead in the first as Lindsay Erickson blasted a two-run shot. They scored three more in the top of the third on an RBI double and two-run single.
The Pioneers got the on the board in the third inning as junior
Jessica Julich (Kings Park, N.Y.) led off with a double to center. A wild pitch advanced her to third, and she scored on sophomore
Catherine Havens' (East Northport, N.Y.) single to left field. Havens would score on
Nicole Hagenah's (Commack, N.Y.) fielder's choice.
The Mavericks scored another in the seventh to seal the Pioneer defeat. Junior
Liz Weber (Bay Shore, N.Y.) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Offensively, junior
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) finished 2-for-4 at the plate.
In the second game, the Pioneers took a 3-0 lead in the first as Gonzalez stroked a two-run shot to left center and freshman
Paige Swantek (Commack, N.Y.) drove in the third run with an RBI double.
Southwest Minnesota State scored a run in the third on Amy Dreessen's double, and tallied two more in the fourth, tying the game on Kailey Hanson's two-run double.
The Pioneers grabbed the lead with a five-run fifth inning capped by a grand slam from sophomore
Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.), but the Mustangs rallied for a five-run inning of their own in bottom the seventh to tie the game.
The game went into international tiebreaker but neither team could push across a run in the eighth. The Pioneers took a 9-8 lead in the ninth, but in the bottom of the inning, Dreessen tripled to left center to tie the game, and Morgan Peterson homered to end the game in dramatic fashion and give the Mustangs the 11-9 victory.
Weber was saddled with the loss despite only throwing one inning as she surrendered two runs on three hits as the fourth Pioneer pitcher used in the game. Swantek and senior
Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.) each registered two hits in the nightcap.
Next on the slate for the Pioneers is a doubleheader against Adelphi and MSU – Moorhead on Wednesday starting at 11 a.m.
