KISSIMMEE, FLA. (March 13, 2013) - The LIU Post softball team finished the day 1-1, starting off with a 6-0 loss to regional foe Adelphi University before securing a game two victory over Minnesota State University Moorhead by a score of 2-1.
The Panthers jumped on the board early, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Emily Dorko led off the game with a bunt single and advanced to third after a Heather Salerno sacrifice bunt and a Victoria Wink ground out. With two outs, Meghan Heiser was able to reach base on a Pioneer miscue allowing Dorko to score the first run of the game. Still with two outs, the Panthers loaded the bases off two consecutive singles before
Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) walked Jeanine Leo plating Heiser. Weber then got out of the jam by catching the next Panther looking.
The Panthers tacked on three more in the third when two consecutive Pioneer errors allowed a run to score and another runner to get on base. Leo then took Weber deep for a two-run homer, increasing Adelphi's lead to 5-0. Adelphi's sixth run scored in the fourth inning when Wink walked with one out. Heiser followed with a single, but the sixth Pioneer mistake of the game allowed Wink to come all the way around from first to score.
LIU Post was able to get two runners on base in each of the first, fourth, and seventh innings but were unable to push any runs across. In the seventh, freshman
Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) stroked a one out single. Two batters later, senior first baseman
Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.) followed suit with a single to center of her own giving the Pioneers runners on first and second with two outs. Adelphi's Laurin Watts settled down and closed the game with a strikeout stifling the Pioneers' threat.
Swantek finished with a 2-for-3 showing.
Watts (6-1) grabbed the victory in the circle for Adelphi with the complete game shutout, scattering six hits while striking out 10.
Weber (2-3) was saddled with her third loss of the season, throwing four innings allowing six runs (one earned) on eight hits. Freshman
Quincy Lewis (Corning, N.Y.) came in relief in the fifth and finished the game allowing two hits and striking out one without giving up a walk or a run.
In game two, the Pioneers were able to secure a 2-1 victory. Junior center fielder
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) started things off for the Pioneers with a first inning blast to right center.
In the second, MSU Moorhead was able to push a run across. Rachel Sannicandro singled to right center with two outs and advanced to second on a passed ball. Kristen Nordby followed with a single to left center, scoring Sannicandro from second base.
The Pioneers pulled ahead in the fourth inning when junior shortstop
Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) led the inning off with an infield single. Sophomore catcher
Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) then reached on a fielder's choice setting the table for Swantek. Swantek singled to the outfield, scoring Hagenah from second base. The Pioneers loaded the bases with a
Kelsey McLaughlin (Lido Beach, N.Y.) single with no outs, but were not able to capitalize with the next three batters going down in order.
Sophomore pitcher
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) only allowed two more Dragons runners with one in the sixth and one in the seventh.
McLaughlin finished the game 2-for-3.
Salcido recorded her first win on the season, tossing a complete game while scattering three hits and three walks while striking out nine.
