Lions Take Down Women's Basketball 64-57 To Close Out Regular Season

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (March 2, 2013) – In its final game of the regular season, the LIU Post women's basketball team fell to East Coast Conference foe Molloy College 64-57 Saturday afternoon in Quealy Gymnasium.

The loss drops LIU Post to an overall record of 18-8 that includes an 11-7 mark in ECC play.  The Lions improved to 10-16 on the season and pull to 6-12 in conference action.

The Pioneers held the advantage for most of the first 10 minutes of play including a nine point lead when Shayna Gatling (Baldwin, N.Y.) made a layup with 10:25 left to play making the score 16-7.  Over the next six and a half minutes of play, the Lions went on a 15-2 run to regain the lead at 22-18.  LIU Post held Molloy scoreless over the final four minutes of play and tied the game with five ticks left in the half when Jalicia Connell (Westbury, N.Y.) came up with the steal and dribbled the full length of the court and scored a layup on her fast break ending the first half scoring.  Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) led the Pioneers in the half with six points and five rebounds.  The Pioneers struggled from downtown, converting just one three-point shot on eight attempts.

The Lions' Ikema Ross and Ashley Addison combined to score the first four points of the second half, but Peters and Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) answered back with a combined four points to tie the game at 26-all at the 17:20 mark.  From that point, the Pioneers did not fall behind until 5:25 was remaining when a trey by Taylor Kenney gave the Lions their first lead since the opening of the half with the score 50-49.  A few moments later Peters came up with a steal and fed Jalyn Brown (Riverhead, N.Y.) for a fast break layup giving LIU Post the one point lead with 4:40 to play.  However, Molloy's Nicole Arnone answered back with a huge three-point shot to grab the advantage back.  The Lions would not relinquish its lead for the remainder of the game, closing out the contest with a 14-6 run to take the victory by a score of 64-57.

Peters finished with a double double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.  Connell chipped in 10 points of her own, and Marciniak pulled in a game-high 13 boards.  Kenney led Mollow with a 17 point performance off the bench including a five for five performance from the floor.  Both squads finished with mediocre shooting.  The Pioneers shot 30.9% from field goal range including a season low 12.0% from behind the three-point arc.  The Lions were slightly better shooting 36.2% from the field including 26.7% from downtown.

LIU Post awaits the final standings to see who its next opponent will be in the conference championship tournament starting Wednesday, March 6 at 7 p.m.
