EASTON, MASS (March 28, 2013) – The LIU Post softball team split a doubleheader at Stonehill College on a brisk Thursday afternoon in non-conference action, dropping the first game 3-2 but rebounding to take the nightcap 2-1.

The Pioneers improve to 12-5 with the split, while Stonehill goes to 10-14 overall.

The visitors staked a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as junior Liz Weber (Bay Shore, N.Y.) sent a shot over the center field fence, but in the bottom of the inning, Stonehill responded with three runs courtesy of a two-run shot to right center and an RBI single to left.

Both pitchers settled in and put up zeros until the top of the sixth, when the Pioneers made it a one-run game on back-to-back doubles by freshmen Paige Swantek  (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Kelsey McLaughlin (Lido Beach, N.Y.), and they threatened in the seventh, putting two runners on with two outs, but Stonehill's Megan Ruonavaara induced a groundout to end the game.

Weber took the loss, tossing six innings and giving up three run on five hits, three walks, and five strikeouts.  Ruonavaara earned the win, allowing only four hits in seven innings.

In game two, the Skyhawks took a 1-0 lead in the third as Emily Padilla scored on a wild pitch.

The Pioneers were scoreless until the sixth, when sophomore Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) came up with two runners on and one out and lined an RBI double to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.

Freshman Quincy Lewis (Corning, N.Y.) pitched the final inning and two-thirds to earn the save in relief of sophomore Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.), who went 5.1 innings and allowed one run on four hits and three walks, fanning four batters.

Offensively, Weber finished 3-for-4 to lead the Pioneers at the dish.

The Pioneers continue action on the road tomorrow, taking on Merrimack at 12 and 2, playing the contests at Bryant University.
