Softball Splits a Pair With Southern New Hampshire

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 30, 2013) – The LIU Post softball team split a doubleheader with Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon, picking up a 4-0 victory in the first game but falling 5-2 to the Penmen in game two.

The Pioneers improve to 15-6 with the split.

Behind a strong outing by junior pitcher Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.), who tossed a complete-game shutout, the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the third as sophomore Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) scored on an infield error by the Penmen.

Weber made the 1-0 lead stand up and the Pioneers pushed across three more runs in the third when sophomore Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) doubled in two runs and freshman Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) plated another with an RBI single.

The final line for Weber saw the junior toss seven innings, giving up four hits, walking one, and striking out nine.  Junior Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 to lead the Pioneers at the plate, while Palmeri and junior Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) each finished with two hits. 

LIU Post took a 2-0 lead in the second game as Weber smacked a two-run shot, but the Penmen took over the lead in the fourth with two run-scoring singles  and an RBI fielder's choice.  SNHU added two more in the fifth on a two-run double.

Freshman Quincy Lewis (Corning, N.Y.) took the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits, striking out five and walking two.  Dzierzynski led the Pioneers at the plate with two hits.

New up for the Pioneers is a home doubleheader against Dowling College on Tuesday,  April 2 starting at 3 p.m.
