DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (April 16, 2013) – The LIU Post softball team picked up wins in both ends of an East Coast Conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Mercy College.  The Pioneers won game one by a score of 5-2 before taking game two by way of the mercy rule with a 9-0 final after five innings.

With the sweep, LIU Post improves to 31-10 overall and 16-2 in conference play, while Mercy falls to 18-17 on the season including 9-9 in ECC action.

The Mavericks jumped on the board first with an RBI single from Shelby Johnson in the bottom of the third, but the Pioneers came back with two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings and another in the seventh to take the lead.

Junior shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) led off the fourth inning with a double to right center, and sophomore catcher Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) followed with her own double to score Hagenah.  Two outs later, freshman third baseman Kelsey McLaughlin (Lido Beach, N.Y.) legged out an infield single to score Dzierzynski from third.

With two outs in the top of the fifth, junior center fielder Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) singled allowing Hagenah to come up to the plate and homer down the left field line.  Gonzalez added an insurance run in the seventh when she singled in pinch runner Carly Chamberlain (Nesco, N.J.).  Mercy added a run in the bottom of the seventh when Johnson once again knocked an RBI single.

Junior Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) recorded her 16th win in the circle with the four-hit complete game effort.  Gonzalez, Hagenah, and freshman second baseman Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) finished with two hits apiece.

In game two, sophomore hurler Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) was stellar in the circle earning her ninth win tossing five innings of one-hit ball while walking one and striking out four.  The Pioneers provided plenty of offense, exploding for nine runs while keeping the Mavericks off the board.

LIU Post scored four in the first, two in the second, and three more in the fourth to give Salcido more than enough run support.  Five Pioneers finished with two hits including Gonzalez who went 2-for-4 including a homerun with three RBI and two runs scored.

The Pioneers look to continue their success in conference play as they host rival Dowling College on Thursday, April 18 with play starting at 3 p.m.
