BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 18, 2013) – The LIU Post softball team swept an East Coast Conference doubleheader against Dowling College Thursday afternoon. Four homeruns led the Pioneers to a 10-0 win in game one, before battling back in game two to take the sweep with a 6-4 victory.
LIU Post improves to 33-10 on the season including a conference best 18-2 in ECC action, while Dowling falls to 23-13 overall and 12-10 in conference play.
The Pioneers pounded out 10 hits, with four of them homeruns, in the first game to back
Liz Weber's (Brightwaters, N.Y.) effort in the circle, as the junior tossed a complete game shutout and scattered just two hits while striking out seven.
Junior center fielder
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) got the scoring going with a two-run homerun to left center in the third, and freshman third baseman
Kelsey McLaughlin (Lido Beach, N.Y.) added a solo shot in the fourth to bring the lead to 3-0. Freshman second baseman
Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) drilled a blast to left with sophomore catcher
Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) aboard in the fifth to expand the lead to five runs in the fifth inning.
In the sixth, the Pioneers tacked on five runs to cut the game short courtesy of the mercy rule after Gonzalez knocked an RBI single up the middle followed by another homerun from Palmeri, this time a grand slam into the left field bleachers.
Palmeri led the Pioneers offensively, going 3-for-3 with six RBI and two runs scored.
Game two was a different story with Dowling finishing with 11 hits to the Pioneers' four, but the scoreboard still reading in favor of LIU Post.
Gonzalez once again got things rolling for the Pioneers with a first inning sacrifice fly to right field to score Weber.
But Dowling was able to add a run in each of the second and third innings behind the bat of first baseman Jamie Laird. Laird cleared the bleachers in left for a solo shot in the second before smacking an RBI single to right center in the third.
The Pioneers battled back in the bottom of the third with Gonzalez and sophomore left fielder
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) scoring off a Golden Lion miscue in the outfield.
After working the bases loaded with two outs, freshman Victoria Gallagher singled through the left side scoring two Golden Lions allowing Dowling to retake the lead (4-3). However, errors plagued Dowling allowing the Pioneers to score three runs in the bottom of the fifth and eventually win the game by a score of 6-4.
Freshman
Quincy Lewis (Corning, N.Y.) worked three and one-third innings of scoreless relief for her fifth win of the season, allowing just two hits and one walk while keeping Dowling off the board. Hagenah had two of the Pioneers four hits in the contest while also scoring a run.
Tammy Vermeulan, Erica Fischetti, Stephanie Tarango, and Laird all finished with multi-hit games for the visitors.
Next on the slate for the Pioneers is a road doubleheader at ECC foe Bridgeport starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 20.
