Softball Earns Split With Molloy

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 21, 2013) – The LIU Post softball team worked a doubleheader split with East Coast Conference rival Molloy College Saturday afternoon at the Softball Complex. Molloy won the first game 4-2, but the Pioneers battled back and won the second game 3-2 in walk-off fashion.
With the split, LIU Post retains the top spot in the conference with 21-3 in conference record and 36-11 overall. Molloy moves to 39-9 on the season and a second-best 20-4 in ECC play.
In game one, sophomore catcher
Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) produced the only scoring for the Pioneers with a two run blast to left field with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore left fielder
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) scored on the homerun as she singled to lead off the inning.
Molloy answered back in the top of the fifth with two runs on four hits with the big blow coming by a two RBI single up the middle by shortstop Nicolette Sinagra. With the score tied 2-2 in the top of the seventh, the Lions added two runs off RBI singles from Lauren Alexander and Brenda Lee.
The Lions' Kelly Jansen shut the Pioneers down in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure her 18
th win of the season. She tossed a complete game scattering just three hits and two walks while striking out 12.
Freshman reliever
Quincy Lewis (Corning, N.Y.) took the loss for the Pioneers.
Just like the first game, the nightcap came down to the final inning of play with the score tied 2-2.
Freshman
Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) recorded a sacrifice fly in the second inning plating shortstop
Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) for the first run of the game, but Molloy answered back with a run in the top of the third. The Pioneers once again took the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a Hagenah RBI single to right center that plated junior center fielder
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.).
Another RBI single off the bat of Lee evened the score at 2-2 in the top of the fifth, but the Pioneers were resilient, scoring in the bottom of the seventh.
With one out, sophomore right fielder
Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.) drilled a single down the right field line. Junior
Jessica Julich (Kings Park, N.Y.) came on to pinch run for Miller and stole second. A groundout later, Julich was standing on third with two outs, the score tied, and Havens at the plate. Havens hit a swinging bunt towards Molloy's pitcher
Megan Butterworth, but between the speed of Julich running home and Havens running to first, Butterworth was left holding the ball as Julich crossed the plate to end the game.
Sophomore hurler
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) earned her 11
th win on the mound, tossing a complete game while allowing just one earned run on six hits and one walk while fanning four.
Hagenah and Havens finished game two with two hits apiece, while Swantek and Miller each added one.
Next up for the Pioneers is a home contest against Adelphi University on Tuesday, April 23 at 3 p.m.
