BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 23, 2013) – The LIU Post softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Adelphi University Tuesday afternoon at the Softball Complex.  The Pioneers picked up a 5-1 win in the first game, before battling back to take game two by a score of 6-4 on a walk-off grand slam from freshman Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.).

With the sweep, LIU Post moves to 38-11 on the season, while Adelphi drops to 35-13.

In game one, the Panthers jumped out to an early lead with a two-out RBI single from Katie Andrews.  That would be all the runs junior hurler Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) would allow as she shut down the Adelphi offense over the next six innings.

Weber got the run back by leading off the bottom of the first with a solo homerun to right center.  Junior center fielder Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) added a leadoff homerun in the third inning for the eventual game winning run.  The Pioneers scored two more runs in the third off a Swantek RBI single to right field allowing junior shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) to score.  Three batters later, Weber drew a bases loaded walk pushing across freshman second baseman Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) who doubled earlier in the inning.

Swantek added a homerun to left field in the bottom of the fifth to cap LIU Post's scoring.

Weber earned her 19th win of the season allowing just one run on four hits and two walks while striking out seven.  Swantek led the offense going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

Adelphi once again put a run on the board in the top of the first in game two on yet another Andrews RBI single, but the Pioneers quickly evened the score in the bottom half of the inning when Hagenah hit a single to left to knock in Weber from third.

The Panthers retook the lead as they scored three runs in the top of the third capped off by a two RBI single from Meghan Heiser.  The Pioneers answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning after Swantek singled to left to score Hagenah to cut the lead to two (4-2).

Both defenses were able to shut down the opposing offenses as the score remained 4-2 going into the bottom of the seventh.

Adelphi's pitcher Laurin Watts hit the leadoff batter Hagenah to start off the inning.  Sophomore Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) followed in the next at bat with a single up the middle, and Palmeri drew a walk to load the bases with no outs setting the stage for Swantek.  Swantek came to the plate and blasted her first career grand slam over the left field fence to end the game and secure the come-back, walk-off win for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers are back in action tomorrow Wednesday, April 24 as they host Caldwell College with play starting at 3 p.m.
