ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (April 7, 2013) – The LIU Post softball team continued its offensive onslaught Sunday afternoon with a double header sweep at Dominican College Sunday afternoon.  The Pioneers swatted 13 hits en route to an 11-2 game one win before knocking 15 hits in the game two 8-1 victory.

LIU Post improves to 22-9, while Dominican slips to 14-14.

In game one, junior shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) smashed a home run with junior center fielder Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) aboard to start the scoring in the first inning.  The following inning, junior hurler Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) added a solo shot bringing the score to 3-0.  Freshman second baseman Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) came up in the third inning with the bases loaded and singled up the middle to score Hagenah and Gonzalez.  The Pioneers added their sixth run of the game in the top of the fourth when Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to right field allowing Weber to score.

Dominican finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Weber gave up a bases loaded walk to force Kimberly Ragazzo in from third.

Weber was able to redeem herself in the top of the fifth when she hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score junior right fielder Jessica Julich (Kings Park, N.Y.).  The Pioneers added four more runs in the inning behind a Gonzalez two RBI groundout and Hagenah's second two run blast of the day.

The Chargers added a run in the bottom of the fifth win an RBI groundout from Ashley Corrao, but Weber and the Pioneer defense would hold the Chargers to two runs to end the game after five innings.  Weber tossed five innings, scattering four hits and four walks while striking out four.

In game two, Corrao scored for Dominican in the second inning on a wild pitch for their lone run of the game.  Pitchers Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) and Quincy Lewis (Corning, N.Y.) kept the Chargers from crossing the plate for the remainder of the game leading to the 8-1 victory.

Gonzalez came up in the third inning and doubled to center field to score Weber for the Pioneers first run of the game.  Hagenah followed with a ball that the Dominican shortstop mishandled allowing sophomore left fielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) to cross the plate.  A few batters later after the Pioneers loaded the bases freshman third baseman Kelsey McLaughlin (Lido Beach, N.Y.) and Julich drew back-to-back walks to force in Hagenah and Dzierzynski for the third and fourth runs of the inning.

The Pioneers added a run in the sixth when Hagenah doubled to left field to score Havens all the way from first.  They scored another three runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away.  Palmeri led off the inning with a solo blast followed by a Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) single.  McLaughlin then followed in the next at bat by drilling the ball to center field for a double and knocking in Swantek from first base.  Two batters later, Weber singled to score McLaughlin for the Pioneers eight and final run of the game.

Salcido got the win in the circle with four innings of work allowing four hits and one run.  Lewis earned her fourth save of the year tossing three hitless innings walking one and fanning two.

Weber, Palmeri, and Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) all finished the day 5-for-8.

Next up for the Pioneers is a home double header on Tuesday, April 9 as they host East Coast Conference foe Queens College with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
