BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 3, 2013) – Behind a strong effort from junior pitcher Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) and a bases loaded walk to force in a run, the No. 14 LIU Post softball team advances to the 2013 East Coast Conference Championship Game after defeating Molloy, 1-0, Friday afternoon.

LIU Post improves to 46-11, while Molloy drops to 44-12 with the loss.

Before the game even started it was evident this would be a pitchers' duel with the winner enjoying a pass into the championship game.   This was clearly the case as the Lions' duo of seniors Kelley Jansen and Megan Butterworth held the Pioneers to a mere three hits, while Weber scattered just five hits on the game.  With the two powerhouse offenses present, it is hard to believe the lone run of the game came via a walk with the bases loaded that pushed across a run.

Jansen retired the first two batters in the top of the fourth before working herself into a jam.  Junior center fielder Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) picked up a two-out single to the shortstop to get things rolling for the offense.  Junior shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) and sophomore catcher Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) followed with back-to- back walks to load the bases.  Freshman second baseman Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) then worked the count to draw the third consecutive walk thrown by Jansen allowing Gonzalez to cross the plate for the eventual game winning run.

The Lions' offense managed to get runners aboard in each of the first five innings, but Weber and the Pioneer defense allowed just two Molloy base runners to advance past second base.

Jansen took the loss on the mound allowing one run on just two hits while fanning seven.

Weber earned her 24th win of the season with the complete game shutout while striking out seven.

Weber, Gonzalez, and sophomore right fielder Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.) each collected a hit for the offense.

The Pioneers will once again take on Molloy College in the ECC Championship game Saturday, May 4 with action starting at noon.
