Box Score
CALDWELL, N.J. (Sept. 23, 2013) - Locked in a 1-1 stalemate at the half, the LIU Post women's soccer team netted two second-half goals in under a minute to defeat Caldwell, 3-1, on Monday afternoon in Caldwell, N.J. With the win, the Pioneers improved to a record of 3-2 on the year.
The Cougars (3-2-1), who owned a 5-2 edge in corner kicks, were the first to strike in the contest. An own goal with 19:43 elapsed accounted for the tally.
However, LIU Post answered with the equalizer less than four minutes later. Sophomore midfielder Hanna Westerling (Alvadalen, Sweden) one-timed a feed from freshman forward/midfielder Julia Backman (Morsil, Sweden) to knot things up at 1-apiece.
In the latter stanza, Backman got into the goal-scoring column. She netted her first collegiate tally in the 64th minute, off a pass by junior midfielder Jackie Niciforo (East Islip, N.Y.), which put the visitors ahead by a 2-1 count.
Just 47 seconds later, sophomore forward Susanne Vistnes (Randaberg, Norway) gave the Pioneers some insurance. A 15-yard blast from the right wing made it a 3-1 game, and sealed the deal.
In net, Caldwell's Robin Franchi (Sewell, N.J.) made a game-high seven saves. Sophomore Katelyn Phillips (Littleton, Colo.) had a pair of stops for LIU Post.
Head Coach Mark Dawson and the Pioneers return to the pitch Wednesday (Sept. 25), when they square off with Philadelphia at Robert Blitz Field in Brookville, N.Y. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
