Ambrogi's Early Tally Leads No. 24 Women's Soccer Past Southern Connecticut, 2-0
Box Score
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Sept. 6, 2013) - A ninth-minute goal by senior midfielder
Jeanine Ambrogi (Greenlawn, N.Y.) proved to be all the 24th-ranked LIU Post women's soccer team needed Friday, in a season-opening 2-0 win versus Southern Connecticut State at the AIC Classic in Springfield, Mass.
After her first attempt was blocked at the 8:14 mark, Ambrogi followed up 44 seconds later with the Pioneers' (1-0) first score of the 2013 season. She managed to beat her defender, and put a shot past SCSU (0-1) sophomore goalie
Rachael Hafer (Laurel Springs, N.J.) for the 1-0 lead, which LIU Post took into the intermission.
Just over 15 minutes into the latter half, the green and gold got some much-needed insurance. Sophomore forward
Susanne Vistnes (Randaberg, Norway) found fellow sophomore
Hanna Westerling (Alvadalen, Sweden) for the Pioneers' second goal of the contest, shutting the door on the Owls.
Overall, Southern Connecticut held a favorable 16-7 clip in shots, half of which were taken by senior midfielder
Suzanne Pires (Sao Paulo, Brazil). However, sophomore keeper
Lauren Phillips (Littleton, Colo.) stood her ground between the pipes for LIU Post, making five saves, in a shutout effort.
Head Coach
