Women's Basketball Dominates Mercy, 98-57

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 15, 2014) - The LIU Post women's basketball team extended their winning streak to four after beating East Coast Conference foe Mercy College on Wednesday night, 98-57, at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville, N.Y.
The Pioneers (9-4, 6-1 ECC) got an 18-point effort from senior guard
Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) on 9-of-13 shooting. She also dished out six assists, hauled in four rebounds and came away with four steals in the win.
The green and gold stormed out of the gate, as sophomore guard
Quanisha Ratley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) gave the Pioneers an early 3-0 lead when she drained a three just six seconds into the contest. LIU Post never looked back as it went on to open the game on a 39-7 run over the first 10-plus minutes of action.
The Pioneers would coast to a 59-23 lead at halftime. The hosts outscored the Mavericks (2-11, 1-7 ECC), 38-4, in the paint. Senior guard
Kiki Sears (Hampton, Va.) led all players at the break with 16 points, while Peters chipped in 12. LIU Post's defense held Mercy to just 23.8 percent shooting from the field, and the green and gold's offense turned 19 Mercy miscues into 27 points.
It wasn't much different in the second half, as the Pioneers used a 14-5 run in a seven-minute spurt to extend their lead to a game-high 42 points (94-52) with 3:07 left to play. After sophomore center
Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.) hit a lay-up with 1:37 remaining to make it 96-54, junior guard
Ariana Ijaduola (Teaneck, N.Y.) hit a jumper with 56 seconds remaining to cap the scoring for the green and gold.
Ratley led the hosts with 13 second-half points. Senior forward
Shayna Gatling (Baldwin, N.Y.) amassed 10 points and eight boards.
Gatling finished with her first double-double of the season (16 points, 10 rebounds). Sophomore guard
Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) chipped in 11, marking the 11th time out of the team's 13 games that she has eclipsed double figures in scoring.
