BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 19, 2014) - Led by a 10-point, 15-rebound effort from junior center
Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J), the LIU Post women's basketball team defeated Bloomfield, 73-63, in a non-conference tilt at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville.
The Pioneers (2-1) came out shooting in the first half, draining 61 percent of the shots they took in the opening 20 minutes of action. Bloomfield (1-1), on the other hand, shot just 33 percent from the floor.
LIU Post opened the game on a 10-2 run that was fueled by Davis and senior guard
Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.). Williams found Davis down low for six of the 10 points. After Bloomfield cut it to 10-5, the Pioneers rattled off 10 straight points to go up 20-5 with 13:05 left in the first half. During the run, Williams had three points and an assist. Junior guard
Quanisha Ratley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added three points, while senior guard
Ashley Castle (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Davis had two apiece.
With just under 10 minutes to go, Bloomfield looked to get back into the game after Tianna Smith hit a three-pointer to bring the visitors within 10 (22-12), but junior point guard
Khea Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) hit a lay-up and red-shirt freshman
Jasmine Bailey (Washington, D.C.) completed a three-point play after she was fouled on a basket to extend the Pioneers' lead back to 15 (27-12).
Then, with under a minute left before the break, Ariel Wilson was fouled while hitting a lay-up for Bloomfield. She drilled the subsequent free throw to make it a five-point game (34-29), but LIU Post responded with four straight points from Williams, before De'Andrea Humphries hit a three just before the buzzer sounded. The Pioneers took a 38-31 lead into halftime.
Williams led all scorers in the first half with 12. She also added five helpers. Davis netted eight points, while hauling in nine boards. Ratley and Davis each recorded two blocks.
Bloomfield opened the second half on a 9-3 run to cut the deficit to two (42-40), but LIU Post would extend its lead to nine after Williams made two free throws with 8:19 to go.
Each time the Bears tried to get close, the Pioneers had an answer, leading by no less than five points throughout the rest of the game. With 13 seconds remaining, Castle netted a lay-up to cap the scoring for LIU Post, sealing the 73-63 win.
