AMHERST, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2014) - The No. 16 LIU Post women's soccer team captured the 2014 East Coast Conference regular-season championship on Sunday with a 5-0 win at Daemen.
The Pioneers (14-1-1, 8-0-1 ECC) ended the regular season on a 15-game unbeaten streak. LIU Post opened the year with an overtime loss to Southern Connecticut State, but the green and gold then rattled off nine straight wins before drawing with Dowling on Oct. 15. Since that tie, the Pioneers have won their last five matches, outscoring their opponents, 11-1, in that stretch.
LIU Post found itself up early in the first half after senior back
Lauren Bellone (West Islip, N.Y.) scored off a rebound in just the fifth minute of action. The opening 45 minutes were tightly contested, but the Pioneers held a 6-2 shot advantage. Daemen (4-13-1, 0-8-1 ECC) took a 3-2 corner kick edge into the break.
The second half was a different story, however. LIU Post dominated the latter 45 minutes of the match, taking 15 total shots, four of which went for goals.
Junior forward
Susanne Vistnes (Randaberg, Norway) netted a pair, her ECC-leading 17th and 18th markers of the season.
In the 53rd minute, Bellone found Vistnes on the left wing and the junior sent home the shot. A minute later, Bellone sent a cross to the top of the box that Vistnes sent in low just inside the left post.
Later, in the 74th minute, Vistnes sent in a corner kick that junior
Morgan Miller (West Nyack, N.Y.) was able to get a head on to beat the Wildcats' keeper.
With time running out, a pair of freshmen connected for the Pioneers' final tally.
Klara Berggren (Stockholm, Sweden) sent a pass to
Alex Lynn (Sydney, Australia), who subsequently ripped a shot just inside the left post.
LIU Post sophomore keeper
Hreffie Agnarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) made two saves for her eighth shutout of the season.
Head Coach
Mark Dawson and the top-seeded Pioneers will be back in action on Wednesday (Nov. 5), when they host fourth-seeded Bridgeport at Pioneer Soccer Park in the semifinals of the East Coast Conference Championship.
