Women's Basketball Falls at Assumption, 74-59

Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. (Nov. 30, 2014) - Playing the second day of a back-to-back, the LIU Post women's basketball team fell to Assumption, 74-59, in a non-conference tilt in Worcester.
 
The Pioneers (3-2) were led by senior guard Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.), who scored a game-high 21 points, who has now scored 20-plus points in four out of the team's five games this season.
 
In the first half, Assumption jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead over the first 3:37, capped by a layup from Jo Impellizeri. The Greyhounds continued to lead by eight at 12-4 after a baseline jumper from sophomore Jaclyn Storey, before a pullup jumper by junior guard Quanisha Ratley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) cut the lead to 14-6 with 11:25 left in the opening half.
 
Throughout the first half, the Pioneers fought an up-hill battle, trailing as many as 17 on three different occasions. LIU Post was able to cut into the deficit, but the hosts took a 31-14 lead into the break. Assumption was able to outscore the Pioneers 10-4 in second-chance points and 13-2 in points off the bench.
 
After Teneya McLaughlin hit a three-pointer to give Assumption an 18-point advantage (47-29) with 13:32 to go in the second half, the Pioneers responded with an 8-0 run. Williams scored six, while Ratley capped the scoring with a steal and a fast-break layup.
 
That was the closest the Pioneers would get. LIU Post shot 33 percent from the floor (23-for-70), including 19 percent from three-point territory (3-for-16). Ratley finished with 15 points and four steals. Senior guard Ashley Castle (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 11 points and six rebounds. Williams also dished out six assists.
 
Head Coach Deirdre Moore and the Pioneers return to action on Wednesday (Dec. 3), when they take on Bridgeport in their 2014-15 East Coast Conference opener. The opening tip is scheduled for 5 p.m.
