BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 15, 2014) - On Monday, senior catcher
Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) and senior outfielder
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) were selected as captains of the 2015 LIU Post softball team.
Last season, the Pioneers owned a 50-11 mark, capturing an East Coast Conference and NCAA Division II East Region Championship along the way. Dzierzynski and Havens were an integral part of the squad's 2014 success, as they combined for 159 hits, 97 RBI and 292 putouts.
Dzierzynski's prolific season earned her NFCA All-America first-team distinction, as she blustered a .438 batting average with 85 hits, 25 home runs and 77 RBI.
"Aly has been a warrior for this team over her career," said Head Coach
Jamie Apicella (Holbrook, N.Y.). "Being our catcher for four years, Aly has been a team leader. She not only leads by example, but Aly is our vocal leader who expects nothing but the best from herself and especially from her teammates. She is a passionate young woman who loves the game of softball and lives every day of her life to the fullest. I can always count on Aly to be our spiritual leader who will never take a day off. She has had so many big moments on the field for this team, that this captainship is well-deserved. Aly is another phenomenal student who excels in the classroom and sets a great example for the younger players on the team. She definitely wears 'Post Pride' on her sleeve. Aly is such a great leader and I am so grateful to have had the chance to coach her."
Havens, who boasted a 38-run output in 2014, finished the season with a .361 batting average, 74 hits and 20 RBI
"Since Cat Havens has walked onto the campus of LIU Post, she has led this team by example for four years," Apicella stated. "She has been a student-athlete who has exemplified the core values of our department. Cat is an honor student who puts forth a high effort, both on the softball field and in the classroom. She is a tremendous role model for a core of young outfielders, and truly puts her teammates first while being an extension of the coaching staff. It is no surprise that her teammates voted her captain for the second-straight year. It has been an honor to be her coach and we both want to exhaust every effort to have Cat go out on top with her teammates this year."
