DANBURY, Conn. (Dec. 22, 2014) - Following a milestone season that culminated in the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance in almost a decade, four members of the LIU Post football team were named ECAC Division II All-Stars on Monday.
Headlining the selections was senior defensive lineman
David Sumter (Hollis, N.Y.), who was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year by the organization. Moreover, the ECAC selected senior quarterback
Steven Laurino (Boise, Idaho), offensive lineman
Chris Rossi (Hillsborough, N.J.) and linebacker
Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) to the all-star roster.
Sumter proved to be a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks as the defensive lineman racked up a team-best 9.5 sacks and 15 quarterback hits. The 2014 Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Lineman of the Year also collected 39 tackles and led the squad with 15 tackles for loss. His best statistical game of the year came against Bentley on Nov. 8, when he recorded three sacks for a loss of 18 yards, four quarterback hits and two pass break-ups in the team's 35-31 victory. Plus, Sumter forced two fumbles and recovered two during the 12-game campaign.
Laurino shattered several team records on his way to being selected as the Northeast-10 Most Valuable Player. The fifth-year quarterback had the most completed passes (317) in program history, racking up 3,565 passing yards and 29 touchdowns. He emerged as a leader in the Pioneers' running attack as well, accumulating 19 touchdowns and 609 yards on the ground. Laurino's record-breaking career numbers include program-bests in total offensive yards (11,911), career passing yards (9,673) and passing touchdowns (86). Additionally, Laurino was named one of just nine finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy, which is bestowed upon the best player in all of Division II football.
Rossi's senior leadership was one of the big keys for the Pioneers' successful season. The offensive line let up only 23 sacks over the 12-game season, and Rossi spent time at both guard and center for the green and gold. The Pioneers were able to move the ball at a phenomenal pace, as LIU Post led the league in yards per game (456.8), first downs per game (27.2) and points per game (33.4). Furthermore, LIU Post was tops in the conference at converting on third downs (49%) and fourth downs (62%).
Brunetti muscled his way to a team-best 120 tackles on the season. 62 of which were solo stops, and his 10.0 tackles per game average was second-best in the Northeast-10. The converted running back also led the Pioneers with four interceptions, a mark which was fourth-best in the NE-10 and second-best in the conference among non-defensive backs. In addition, Brunetti forced three fumbles and recovered two over the course of the season, while also blocking a kick. His best statistical game came in the team's 48-21 Homecoming blowout of Saint Anselm on Oct. 18, as Brunetti racked up 13 tackles, including two for a loss, broke up a pass, forced a fumble and recovered another fumble.
