BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Mar. 18, 2014) - The LIU Post softball team kicked off a long homestand Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep of Southern Connecticut State at the LIU Post Softball Complex in Brookville, N.Y. The Pioneers took the opener, 8-1, before pulling out a 4-2 win in the nightcap.
With the wins, LIU Post improved to 7-3 overall. On the other hand, Southern Connecticut State slipped to a mark of 7-4.
The green and gold did not waste any time getting on the board in the first game as a fielder's choice off the bat of senior shortstop
Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) plated junior left fielder
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.), who had walked to start the inning. Two batters later, catcher
Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) drilled a double down the left-field line to bring Hagenah around from second base.
The very next inning, the Pioneers doubled their lead when Havens and freshman first baseman
Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored on a single by senior center fielder
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.).
In the fourth, the Owls were able to push a run across on a fielder's choice, but LIU Post put the game out of reach with four runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double by Dzierzynski.
Senior
Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) improved to 4-1 in the circle as she tossed seven innings. The righty allowed just one run on six hits and two walks, while fanning three.
Game Two was a much closer match-up. Once again, the Pioneers scored in the first. Three straight hits to begin the inning led to Havens scoring on a Gonzalez infield single.
Another two runs the following frame extended the lead to 3-0. After McCoy reached on a fielding error, sophomore third baseman
Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) singled to left field, but the ball was misplayed allowing McCoy to come all the way around from first. Later in the inning, junior right fielder
Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.) came home on a wild pitch.
A two-RBI single by Kaley Marden in the top of the third brought the Owls back within one run of LIU Post, but a solo shot by Dzierzynski in the bottom of the fifth gave freshman
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) all the run support she needed in the circle as she earned her third win of the year. In her home debut, Martin pitched a complete game, allowing just two runs on seven hits with five walks and two strikeouts.
Dzierzysnki led the Pioneer offense on the day with a 5-for-8 showing, including two doubles and a home run. She also chipped in with four RBIs. McCoy and sophomore designated player
Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) each finished with four hits.
The Pioneers are back in action on Thursday (Mar. 20), as they host Le Moyne for a doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m. at the LIU Post Softball Complex.
