BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Mar. 22, 2014) - A 23-hit day for the LIU Post softball team led to a doubleheader sweep of Stonehill Saturday at the LIU Post Softball Complex in Brookville, N.Y. The Pioneers earned a 6-1 win in the opener, followed by an 8-2 drubbing in the nightcap.
Senior pitcher
Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) kept the Skyhawks (5-9) off the board until the seventh inning. She tossed six and two-third innings, giving up just one run on three hits and three walks while fanning three.
Her offense scored six over the first six innings. Freshman
Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) got the scoring started when she hit a sacrifice fly to score sophomore designated player
Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.). Swantek added a second run in the fourth with a solo shot down the left-field line.
After an RBI single off the bat of senior center fielder
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) in the fifth, the Pioneers (11-3) tacked on three in the sixth, highlighted by a two-RBI single by junior left fielder
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.).
Havens, Gonzalez, Swantek, McCoy, and junior catcher
Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) each finished the game with two hits.
The offensive onslaught continued for the Pioneers in Game Two as junior right fielder
Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.) singled to center in the second to bring home McCoy for LIU Post's' first run. In the next frame, Dzierzynski sent her fifth home run of the season over the fence in right center with senior shortstop
Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) and Gonzalez aboard to extend the lead to 4-0.
The green and gold added two more in the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles up the middle from sophomore third baseman
Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) and Miller.
The Skyhawks would not be held scoreless, though, as first baseman Cayleigh McCarthy hit her first long ball of the year with Lindsay McKillop aboard to cut the lead to 6-2.
That would not be all the scoring as Gonzalez matched McCarthy with a two-run shot of her own to center field after freshman second baseman
Melissa Peet (Monroe, Conn.) led off LIU Post's half of the sixth with a walk.
Freshman
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) went the distance to claim her fifth win of the season, giving up two runs on nine hits and three strikeouts.
Miller finished Game Two 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
On the day, Havens raked in four hits in seven at-bats to lead the Pioneers.
LIU Post finishes up its homestand Sunday (Mar. 23), when they host Dominican for a non-conference doubleheader at the LIU Post Softball Complex. Play is set to start at noon.
