BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Mar. 23, 2014) - The LIU Post softball team continued its offensive onslaught with a doubleheader sweep of Dominican on Sunday at the LIU Post Softball Complex in Brookville, N.Y. The Pioneers clinched wins of 14-0 and 9-0 on the day.

In Game One, the Pioneers (13-3) poured on runs in the first three innings of play. A five-run first inning was kickstarted by a two-run homer to right-center by senior center fielder Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.). Junior catcher Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) added an RBI single down the right-field line, while sophomore third baseman Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) found the fence in right field for a two-RBI double.

The next frame was no different as the green and gold unloaded for seven runs. Gonzalez was once again in the thick of things as she legged out a triple to center field, sending home junior left fielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) and freshman second baseman Melissa Peet (Monroe, Conn.). In the next at-bat, senior shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) singled through the right side to plate Gonzalez.  The second-inning scoring was capped off with a grand slam to right-center by Palmeri.

With her squad leading Dominican (2-10) 12-0 after two innings, junior Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) relieved starter Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) in the circle and tossed three innings of no-hit softball while striking out five.

Five Pioneers finished the opener with multiple hits, led by a 3-for-3 showing from Dzierzynski.

Gonzalez once again got the scoring started in the nightcap as she knocked home Havens in the bottom of the first with a single.

Freshman Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) and the Chargers' Elizabeth Hogan battled over the next three innings with neither side conceding any runs.

With a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, LIU Post broke the game open with five runs. After a Gonzalez RBI single and a Charger miscue with two outs, the Pioneers were able to score four unearned runs, highlighted by a two-RBI single off the bat of Dzierzynski.

Another Charger error in the following inning opened the door for the green and gold to end the game via the mercy rule. For the second-consecutive inning, Hagenah reached on a fielding error. This time, Havens was able to come around to score. In the very next at-bat, sophomore designated player Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) drilled her fourth homer of the year over the fence in left center to end the game walk-off style.

Havens finished the twinbill a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs scored. Gonzalez and Dzierzynski each totaled four hits, while Palmeri led the way with seven RBIs.

Martin earned her sixth win, giving up just four hits and one walk over six innings of work. The freshman also struck out three.

The Pioneers will continue their homestand as they open up East Coast Conference play on Thursday, Mar. 27, hosting Mercy for a 2:30 p.m. start.
