Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.), the LIU Post women's basketball team captured a 72-61 win over East Coast Conference foe Mercy at Mercy Gymnasium on Wednesday.
Davis poured in 32 points, topping her previous career-best of 23 against Dowling earlier this season. The junior also hauled in 11 rebounds for her second-consecutive double double. Senior guard
Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) registered 15 points. Junior guard
Quanisha Ratley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 12 points, six boards and four assists. The Pioneers (7-5, 3-1 ECC) shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the floor in the game, while Mercy (7-5, 1-4 ECC) shot an even 40.0 percent (25-of-40).
In the first half, LIU Post used solid offensive rebounding to build a lead heading into the break. The Pioneers outscored Mercy, 10-4, in second-chance points and collected eight offensive rebounds to Mercy's four. After the Mavericks tied the score at 2-2 less than a minute in, LIU Post went ahead and never looked back. Davis amassed 11 first-half points and brought down six boards. Ratley chipped in eight points and four rebounds in the opening stanza.
In the second half, with the Pioneers up by 12 (52-40), Williams hit a lay-up at the 10:52 mark to give LIU Post its largest lead of the contest (54-40). The green and gold maintained a double-digit advantage throughout most of the game, capturing its second-straight win in the process.
With the victory, the Pioneers improved to 24-1 against Mercy, dating back to 1996, and have now won their last 20 contests against the Mavericks.
Next up for LIU Post is a date with St. Thomas Aquinas. The Pioneers and Spartans are set to do battle at the Pratt Recreation Center on Saturday (Jan. 10) at 1:30 p.m. in Brookville.
