Women's Basketball Falls to Adelphi in ECC/NE-10 Challenge, 63-55
Box Score PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 15, 2015) - On Sunday afternoon, the LIU Post women's basketball fell to Adelphi University, 63-55, as it wrapped up play at the East Coast Conference/Northeast-10 Conference Challenge, hosted by Pace University at the Goldstein Fitness Center in Pleasantville.
For the second-straight game, the Pioneers (0-2) were led by a newcomer. Junior forward
Janaysia James (Perth Amboy, N.J.) paced LIU Post with 18 points in 26 minutes of action.
In the first quarter, the Pioneers got on the board first, but the Panthers (1-1) took control soon after, outscoring the green and gold 17-10 to bring a 17-12 lead into the first intermission.
In the second quarter, LIU Post struggled from the field, shooting just 18.1 percent (2-for-11), as Adelphi took a 31-19 lead into halftime.
The Pioneers turned up the offense, as they tried to mount a comeback starting in the third quarter. LIU Post outscored Adelphi, 19-13, in the period.
In the final 10 minutes, the Pioneer offense came alive again. With LIU Post trailing 44-38 to start the quarter, the green and gold went on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 46-all with 5:42 to go. Freshman guard
Robyn Francis (Rosedale, N.Y.) drained a three, before fellow freshman guard
Amber Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line to even the score.
Then, with less than four minutes to go and the Pioneers down by four, junior forward
Melsha Messam (St. Albans, N.Y.) hit a fast-break lay-up, followed by a Francis trey with 2:40 remaining, to give LIU Post its first lead (53-52) since 2-0.
Adelphi had an answer, however, as the Panthers scored the next six points to take a 59-53 lead with just over a minute left and outscored the Pioneers, 7-2, over the game's final minute.
Francis finished with 11 points. Messam added 10 points off the bench. Senior center
Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.) collected nine boards.

Deirdre Moore and her LIU Post squad return to action on Saturday (Nov. 21), when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on Holy Family University in a non-conference tilt. The opening tip is slated for 2 p.m.
