Women's Basketball Drops 64-61 Decision at Holy Family
Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Nov. 21, 2015) - On Saturday, a late rally by the LIU Post women's basketball team wasn't enough in a 64-61 loss to Holy Family University at the Campus Center in Philadelphia.
The Pioneers (0-3) got off to a strong start, leading by as many as 12 points (19-7). They would hold a 19-9 advantage at the conclusion of the opening quarter.
Things changed in the ensuing period, as Holy Family (2-2) came out shooting in the second quarter and turned a 10-point deficit into a three-point lead (30-27) at halftime.
Senior center
Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.) paced the green and gold with 12 first-half points in 18 minutes. Davis was a solid 6-for-8 from the floor and brought down five rebounds.
In the third quarter, LIU Post got within three (32-29), when freshman guard
Shannon Doyle (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) hit a lay-up at the 8:30 mark.
In the final 10 minutes, the Pioneers looked to mount a comeback. With LIU Post trailing by eight (63-55) with under 30 seconds to go, senior guard
Khea Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) knocked down a three-pointer to make it a five-point game. After the Lady Tigers made 1-of-2 subsequent shots from the line, freshman guard
Robyn Francis (Rosedale, N.Y.) hit a trey with two seconds left, but the rally attempt fell just short.
Davis led all players with 16 points and hauled in eight boards. Gibbs poured in a season-high 12 points. Junior forward
Janaysia James (Perth Amboy, N.J.) chipped in nine points, while fellow junior forward
Melsha Messam (St. Albans, N.Y.) had a game-high 11 boards and added eight points.
Head Coach
Deirdre Moore and the Pioneers return to the hardwood on Tuesday (Nov. 24), when they head to Bloomfield, N.J. to take on Bloomfield College in a non-conference tilt. The opening tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
