Box Score 2 LAKELAND, Fla. (Mar. 11, 2015) - Highlighed by sophomore
Melissa Peet's (Monroe, Conn.) two-run blast, the No. 11 LIU Post softball team split a doubleheader at Florida Southern on Wednesday.
Game One saw a Mocs (12-15) victory, as the Pioneers (1-3) dropped the contest, 3-2. The green and gold got on the board first after a
Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) double to left-center helped
Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) cross the plate.
Florida Southern went on to answer the Pioneers' offensive effort as a sacrifice fly, a single to left field and another single to right gave the Mocs a 3-1 lead. Senior
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) added a tally to the scoreboard as she tripled to left field and advanced home on a throwing error by the shortstop in the top of the sixth to put the green and gold within one (3-2).
Hurlers
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif) and
Isabella Corrao (Farmingdale, N.Y.) combined for three strikeouts through six innings in the circle.
Florida Southern started with an early lead in Game Two, as a run in the bottom of the first and two in the second put them up by three.
However, the Pioneers tied the contest at 3-all in the top of the fifth, when
Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) slugged a bases-clearing double to left-center, scoring
Claire Travis (East Meadow, N.Y.),
Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) and
Mackenzie Buckley (St. James, N.Y.).
The Mocs answered with two of their own though in the latter half of the inning to, once again, secure the lead.
With no outs in the top of the seventh, Dzierzynski doubled down the left-field line to score Havens, pulling the visitors within one at 5-4. Two batters later, Peet stepped up to the plate and crushed a two-run homer to left-center to seal the victory for LIU Post.
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) threw six innings for the Pioneers in the win and recorded three strikeouts. Corrao was credited with the save.
Head Coach
