Melissa Peet (Monroe, Conn.) home runs and a three-run blast off the bat of
Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.), the No. 19 LIU Post softball team split a doubleheader against Southern Connecticut State at the LIU Post Softball Complex on Thursday.
The Pioneers (4-6) took the early lead in Game One, when sophomore left-fielder
Mackenzie Buckley (St. James, N.Y.) singled through the right side in the second inning to score
Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.). Then, in the third, the Pioneers tacked on another tally. Peet launched a solo shot that cleared the fence in right field, making it a 2-0 game.
The Owls (4-7) answered back though in the fourth with a two-run homer that evened the contest. The tie stood through regulation and sent the competition into extra innings. Southern Connecticut eventually secured the 4-2 victory in the top of the eighth with another two-run homer.
Sophomore pitcher
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) commanded the circle through eight innings for the green and gold. She struck out eight and allowed just one walk.
The Pioneer offense could not be stopped in Game Two, as the contest ended in a six-inning, 10-0 LIU Post win.
Scoring commenced immediately, as the Pioneers manufactured four runs in the first. A
Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) sacrifice fly, a Peet double and a Palmeri single accounted for the runs. In the bottom of the third, Peet sent another out of the park, to increase the LIU Post lead to 5-0, while the sixth inning tallied five more scores off a Buckley single, a Swantek double and a Palmeri three-run homer, respectively, to clinch the 10-0 victory.
Salcido, who improved to 2-2 on the year, tossed six frames of no-hit ball. She walked one and fanned five in the effort.

Jamie Apicella and the Pioneers return to the field Saturday (Mar. 21), when they face NYIT in their 2015 East Coast Conference opener at 11 a.m. in Old Westbury.
