Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Mar. 31, 2015) - On Tuesday, the LIU Post softball team edged St. Thomas Aquinas, 5-1, in an East Coast Conference match-up at the LIU Post Softball Complex.
Due to inclement weather, Game Two of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed to a later date.
The Pioneers (9-6, 5-0 ECC) trailed early in the contest, as freshman shortstop Brittany Malloy homered to left-center in the top of the first to stake the Spartans (5-12, 1-5 ECC) to a 1-0 lead.
However, in the bottom half of the frame, sophomore infielder
Melissa Peet (Monroe, Conn.) tied the game with an RBI single that plated senior catcher
Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.).
In the last of the second, senior outfielder
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) broke the stalemate on her second collegiate homer, a two-run shot down the right-field line.
Then, in the third, LIU Post tacked on two more runs to cap the scoring. Sophomore first baseman
Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) had an RBI single in the frame, and later scored on a throwing error.
Sophomore hurler
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) commanded the circle for the green and gold. She struck out six in 6.0 innings of work.
Hazardous playing conditions forced the game to be called in the bottom of the sixth, which sealed the win for the hosts.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and the Pioneers return to the field Wednesday (Apr. 1), in an East Coast Conference tilt against Bridgerport at the LIU Post Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
