Women's Lacrosse Holds No. 9, No. 11 Spots in Latest Rankings
GRAND LAKE, Colo. (Apr. 13, 2015) - For the fourth-straight week, the LIU Post women's lacrosse team has been ranked just inside the Top-10 of the IWLCA Division II Poll, coming in at No. 9. Additionally, the Pioneers were ranked 11th in the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Division II Poll for the sixth-consecutive time this season.
No. 9/11 LIU Post (11-2, 6-0 ECC) maintained an unblemished record in conference with two victories over the past week. First, the Pioneers dispatched of now-No. 18/19 Dowling on Wednesday (Apr. 8) by a final score of 11-4 at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium. Senior midfielder
Jenna Pierro (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored four goals---including a second-half hat trick---to lead the green and gold over the Golden Lions. Sophomores
Stefani Vagelatos (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and
Cara Douglas (West Islip, N.Y.) each added a pair of goals in the victory.
On Friday (Apr. 10), 13 different Pioneers scored a goal in the team's 20-2 takedown of UDC in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Vagelatos scored a team-high four goals while red-shirt sophomore attacker
Emily Delaney (Long Valley, N.J.) had a seven-point outing with a goal and six assists. Three players notched a milestone by scoring their first career collegiate goal, including junior
Kasey Kephart (Nesconset, N.Y.), sophomore
Brianna Gibbons (Massapequa Park, N.Y.), and red-shirt freshman
Andrea Ferencsik (Holbrook, N.Y.).
Adelphi remained as the No. 1 team in both polls, while Lock Haven stayed at No. 2. The Bald Eagles earned seven first-place votes in the IWLCA tally after handing Lindenwood (Mo.) a loss for the first time all season. The Lions dipped to fourth behind Le Moyne in the IWLCA ledger, but kept their No. 3 ranking in the Nike/LM poll. The Dolphins, meanwhile, rose to third in both polls after knocking off Stonehill, relegating the Skyhawks to the ranks of the once-beaten. Florida Southern, which currently holds a 16-2 record on the 2015 campaign, stood pat at No. 5 in both rankings.
In the IWLCA ballot, Stonehill claimed the sixth position, followed by Mercyhurst, New Haven, LIU Post and Rollins. Mercyhurst is No. 6 in the Nike/LM poll with Stonehill and New Haven close behind. Rollins clings to the ninth space in the rankings, while Limestone rounds out the top-10 with LIU Post breathing down the neck of the Saints.
