The Pioneer Trail: Wednesday, Apr. 8, 2015
No. 9/11 Women's Lacrosse vs. No. 16/16 Dowling - 4 p.m.Since 2010, the LIU Post women's lacrosse team has had two conference adversaries on Long Island: Molloy and Dowling. However, in the last five years, only the Golden Lions have been able to pester, harass, and defeat LIU Post on three separate occasions. The most recent instance of Dowling obtaining a victory over the Pioneers was in last year's ECC Championship contest, an 11-10 comeback upset that saw a 40-game winning streak come to a bitter end. The chance for revenge comes today, as LIU Post will host Dowling at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium in a battle of the top two programs in the East Coast Conference.
No. 9/11 LIU Post (9-2, 4-0 ECC) knocked Bridgeport from the echelon of the unbeatens last Wednesday (Apr. 1), as the Pioneers rolled to a 13-4 victory at Knights Field. Five players scored at least two goals for the green and gold in the win, as senior midfielder
Jenna Pierro (Holbrook, N.Y.) collected her sixth hat trick of the season to lead the way. Red-shirt sophomore attacker
Emily Delaney (Long Valley, N.J.) registered a team-high five points (2 G, 3 A) and junior defender
Brittany Smith (Dix Hills, N.Y.) led her squad with three draw controls in the contest. Reigning ECC Goalkeeper of the Week
Olivia Kirk (Farmingdale, N.Y.) stopped six Bridgeport shots to boost her conference-best save percentage to .534, which is good for fourth-best among all Division II netminders. Kirk also leads the ECC and is fourth in the nation with a 6.12 goals-against average.
No. 16/16 Dowling (8-3, 3-0 ECC) travels to Brookville after claiming a 10-2 victory over Merrimack last Thursday (Apr. 2) in North Andover, Mass. Senior attacker Jackie Andersen (Shirley, N.Y.) led the Golden Lions with four goals, two in each half. Dowling took advantage of 19 turnovers by the Warriors in the contest, and sophomore goalie Lauren Young (Centereach, N.Y.) made six saves in the win.
