Moore Finalizes 2015-16 Women's Basketball Recruiting Class
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Aug. 20, 2015) - On Thursday, LIU Post Head Women's Basketball Coach
Deirdre Moore announced her final three additions to the 2015-16 squad.
Melsha Messam, F, William E. Grady HSMelsha Massam comes to LIU Post after playing two years at Hostos Community College. After earning the CUNY Most Improved Player Award and being named to the CUNY All-Star Team as a freshman, she was again named a CUNY All-Star as a sophomore. In addition, she was a CUNY All-Tournament first-team selection in both seasons.
Moore on Messam: "Melsha is a double-double machine and we are excited to add her to our team and program. She is a hard worker and has persevered through many obstacles. Melsha is a kind-hearted person and a fearless basketball player. She will add much needed toughness to our front line and we are looking for her to contribute right away."
Simone Charles, PG, Bishop Loughlin HSSimone Charles played for Fisk University before attending and graduating from ASA College. In junior college, she averaged 12.0 points, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game. In the classroom, she posted a 4.0 grade-point average and received the Superio Academic Achievement Award from the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Moore on Charles: "Simone is a natural leader, both vocally and by example. She is an excellent student and a highly motivated person. Simone is a talented point guard that can impact the game on both sides of the ball. She is a floor general who makes the people around her better. Simone is a hard worker and we are very excited to have her join our basketball family."
Kyla Formey, G, Midwood HSKyla Formey comes to Brookville after a standout career at Midwood High School in Brooklyn. As a senior, she averaged 13.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game, and shot 71 percent from the free-throw line. She finished her career with over 1,000 points and was recognized by her high school as the 2011-12 Rookie of the Year and 2013-14 Offensive Player of the Year. Additionally, Formey was a Daily News All-PSAL Brooklyn second-team honoree in 2014 and Honorable Mention in 2015.
Moore on Formey: "Kyla is an excellent student and talented basketball player. She excels both on the court and in the classroom. We are happy she is joining our basketball family. She is a point guard that can play the other guard positions. She is a good defender and in great condition. We are looking forward to Kyla being able to add depth to our backcourt. As a hard worker, she learns quickly and shows good potential to do well."
The Pioneers open the 2015-16 campaign on the road in Pleasantville at the Northeast-10 Conference/East Coast Conference Challenge against Long Island rival Adelphi University on Friday, Nov. 13.
