Wrestle-Offs To Be Held in Honor Of Program's First Coach

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Aug. 31, 2015) - On Wednesday, Oct. 28, the LIU Post wrestling team is scheduled to hold its annual wrestle-offs at the Pratt Recreation Center at 7 p.m.

The event will also recognize and celebrate the career of the program's first-ever coach, Jim Davey. Davey, a member of the 2005 LIU Post Athletic Hall of Fame class, was the lead architect behind the addition of the sport in 1956. He went on to produce a distinguished resume with the Pioneers, including two NCAA Division II National Championships, 15 All-Americans, 38 intercollegiate champions, five Outstanding Wrestler Award winners and three conference titles.

Davey was later praised for his vast contributions to collegiate wrestling, earning induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1997. He was also honored with a selection to the New York State Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1979.

"The program has such a rich history, and Jim Davey served as the first coach of the team," said Head Coach Joe Patrovich. "His family is very involved with wrestling. We want to take the time to honor Jim for what he did for our program."

In addition, the LIU Post wrestling room, which is located on the ground floor of Riggs Hall, is set to be named in Davey's honor.
