OAKDALE, N.Y. (Jan. 30, 2016) - Behind a career-best 24 points from senior guard
Jalyn Brown (Riverhead, N.Y.), the LIU Post women's basketball handled Dowling College, 90-63, in East Coast Conference action Saturday at Dowling Gymnasium.
The Pioneers (3-17, 3-9 ECC) did most of their work in the paint, outscoring Dowling (2-16, 2-10 ECC)
down low, 36-16.
The Golden Lions opened the game on a 9-1 run, before the Pioneers responded with an 11-2 burst to take a 12-11 lead midway through the opening quarter. From there, the green and gold closed out the period on a 14-4 streak and brought an 11-point advantage (26-15) into the first intermission.
Brown scored 12 points in the first 10 minutes. The senior shot 4-of-5 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. As a team, the Pioneers shot 40.0 percent (8-for-20) from the field. Junior forward
Melsha Messam (St. Albans, N.Y.) added seven first-quarter points.
LIU Post scored eight unanswered points in a span of 1:53 to start the second quarter, expanding its lead to 34-15.
Later in the session, freshman guard
Shannon Doyle (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) drained a three to widen the gap to 37-16. The green and gold would lead by as many as 25 points on two different occasions, the last coming when junior forward
Janaysia James (Perth Amboy, N.J.) hit a jumper with 19 seconds to go in the quarter.
Senior guard
Quanisha Ratley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) poured in 11 points in the quarter on 4-of-7 shooting. She was 3-of-4 from the free-throw line, as well. Doyle added seven points in the second, while James contributed five.
In the third, the Pioneers maintained their double-digit lead, thanks to Brown's 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting. The senior also hit 2-of-3 three pointers and was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.
Messam started the fourth with back-to-back jumpers to give the Pioneers a 77-51 lead. Later in the fourth, freshman guard
Kyla Formey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a three to give the green and gold a 26-point advantage (84-58) with 4:37 on the clock. With just over a minute to go, freshman guard
Amber Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) drilled a trey to cap LIU Post's scoring and extend the Pioneers' lead to 29 (90-61).
Brown's 24 points came on 8-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-8 from distance. Ratley finished with 19 points and 10 boards for her second double-double of the season, while Messam amassed 15 points and seven rebounds. As a team, the Pioneers shot 47.1 percent
(32-of-68) from the floor.

Deirdre Moore and the Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday (Feb. 3), when they head to White Plains to take on Mercy College in an ECC battle at the Westchester County Center. The opening tip is slated for 5 p.m.
