BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Mar. 17, 2016) - On Thursday, the LIU Post baseball team defeated Bloomfield College, 6-1, at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville.

The Pioneers got off to a quick start as junior starting pitcher Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.) retired the first three batters he faced, two of which came via strikeout.

In the bottom half of the inning, LIU Post put runners on second and third with one out. Senior first baseman David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly, giving the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead.

After both sides went scoreless in the second and third innings, the Pioneers hustled their way to a run. With runners on first and second and one out, freshman left fielder Joe Piscitelli (Levittown, N.Y.) hit a grounder to third. The Bears (2-8) got the lead runner at second, but the throw back to first was late and that allowed sophomore right fielder Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.) to come around from second and score.

In the fifth, Andreoli drove in a pair of runs of his own with a line drive single up the middle, giving the Pioneers a 4-0 cushion.

The Bears would get on the board in the sixth, but Jagiello worked his way through seven strong innings. The righty struck out a season-best nine hitters and allowed just one earned run on five hits over seven innings.

A Groeneveld double in the seventh and a wild pitch in the eighth gave the Pioneers their remaining runs.

Sophomore lefty Dave Anholzer (West Islip, N.Y.) kept the Bears off the board in the eighth and ninth to seal the win.

Sophomore designated hitter James Cohan (Syosset, N.Y.) and sophomore shortstop Joe Spitaleri (Levittown, N.Y.) both had three-hit games. Groeneveld and Andreoli drove in a pair of runs each to power the offense.

Head coach Mike Gaffney and the Pioneers return to action on Friday (Mar. 18) when they head to New Haven, Conn. to take on University of New Haven in a non-conference game. The first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
