BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 7, 2016) - Sophomore forward/midfielder
Emily Miller (Bridgewater, N.J.) posted her first collegiate hat trick Wednesday to lead the LIU Post field hockey team to a 5-2 triumph versus No. 3 West Chester University in its 2016 home opener at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Miller broke the scoreless tie in the 20th minute, when she re-directed an
Arantxa Rosainz Caloca (Guadalajara, Mexico) shot from the top of the circle past Rams' senior goalie Sarah Krause (Lancaster, Pa.).
Less than two minutes later, Miller forced a turnover in the offensive zone that led to a breakaway. She then made a move around Krause to extend the Pioneers' lead to 2-0.
LIU Post (2-0) led 2-1 at the break, but a defensive save by
Bailey Martin (Honesdale, Pa.) in the 27th minute kept the contest from being tied at halftime.
Early into the second half, senior midfielder
Steph Mocerino (Andover, N.J.) was awarded her second penalty stroke in as many games. With only 17 seconds elapsed, she converted on the shot to re-claim the Pioneers' two-goal edge.
Miller and sophomore forward/midfielder
Tarryn Morris (New Cumberland, Pa.) later tacked on goals to secure the win for the hosts.
LIU Post owned a 14-6 advantage in shots and earned nine penalty corners to West Chester's (1-2) two in the contest. Senior goalie
Ericka Parks (Nesconset, N.Y.) had two saves for the Pioneers.
Head Coach
Raenee Savin and her LIU Post squad are back in action Monday (Sept. 12), when they travel to East Stroudsburg, Pa. for a 4 p.m. showdown at top-ranked East Stroudsburg University.
