Women's Basketball Suffers 71-51 Setback at Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Jan. 14, 2017) - On Saturday, the LIU Post women's basketball team fell by a 71-51 final to East Coast Conference rival Queens College at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
The loss sends the Pioneers to 8-9 overall and 5-3 against league opposition. Meanwhile, the Knights improved to 14-3 and 8-1 in ECC play.
Tied 6-6 with just over three minutes left in the first quarter, the green and gold ended the period on a 10-3 run to take a 16-9 lead. Senior guard
Kristen Olsen (Staten Island, N.Y.) sank a pair of trifectas in the burst. Senior guard
Kylie Garrett (Mount Orab, Ohio) and junior guard
Naya Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y.) each added a basket.
However, Queens reeled off a 29-3 streak in the second quarter to go in front 38-19 at the break. Senior guard/forward Madison Rowland (Albany, N.Y.) led the Knights in the run with 11 points.
From there, Queens never relinquished its double-digit lead. The Knights eventually went ahead by as many 30 points (51-21) with 4:35 left in the third quarter.
Garrett scored a team-high 10 points in 18 minutes off the bench. Olsen and freshman forward
Isla Powell (Highland Mills, N.Y.) recorded nine points apiece. Olsen also pulled down five rebounds, while Powell grabbed six rebounds. Sophomore guard
Shannon Doyle (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) added eight points. Senior forward
Janaysia James (Perth Amboy, N.J.) had seven points and five rebounds.

Deirdre Moore and the Pioneers return to action Wednesday (Jan. 18), when they host Molloy College in an ECC clash at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
