Women's Basketball Loses at Daemen, 96-84

AMHERST, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2017) - The LIU Post women's basketball team opened up a three-game road trip Wednesday with a 96-84 loss to Daemen College in an East Coast Conference clash at Lumsden Gymnasium.

Leading 33-32 with under two minutes to go in the second quarter, the Pioneers (9-11, 5-5 ECC) closed out the first half on an 8-2 run to take a 41-34 lead into the break. Senior guard Kristen Olsen (Staten Island, N.Y.) and freshman guard Asia Turner (Philadelphia, Pa.) ignited the spurt with back-to-back threes. Sophomore guard Kyla Formey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) closed it out with a jumper in the paint.

Late in the third quarter, the green and gold widened the gap to a nine-point difference (61-52), after senior guard Kylie Garrett (Mount Orab, Ohio) buried a three-pointer at the 2:43 mark.

However, the Wildcats (8-11, 5-6 ECC) ended the period on an 11-0 streak to grab a 63-61 advantage. Freshman guard/forward Jordan Heinold (Hamburg, N.Y.) provided the go-ahead lay-up for the hosts.

In the fourth quarter, freshman forward Mikaiya Moore (Amityville, N.Y.) evened the game for LIU Post just 19 seconds in with a jumper.

From there, the two teams exchanged three tied scores and three lead changes, before Daemen reeled off an 18-6 run to pull away for the win.

Four different players scored in double figures for the Pioneers. Olsen collected 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting and grabbed six rebounds in the effort. Moore had 17 points and six rebounds. Senior forward Janaysia James (Perth Amboy, N.J.) amassed 14 points, four rebounds and two steals in 23 minutes off the bench. Formey pitched in 11 points, three assists and two rebounds. Sophomore forward Sasha Patterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added four points and nine rebounds.

Head Coach Deirdre Moore and her LIU Post squad continue their three-game road trip next Wednesday (Feb. 1), when they travel to Sparkill to face ECC rival St. Thomas Aquinas College. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
