PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Jan. 29, 2017) - The LIU Post wrestling team boasted three place-winners Sunday at the USC Wildcat Open, hosted by Johnson & Wales University at the Wildcat Center in Providence.
Red-shirt junior
Jackson Mordente (Farmingville, N.Y.) paved the way for the Pioneers with a second-place finish at the 157-lb. weight class.
Following a first-round bye, Mordente earned a 10-0 majoring of Castleton's Reece Millington, and won a 3-2 tiebreaker over Desmond Towns of Johnson & Wales to advance to the semifinals.
He then secured a 6-1 victory against Roger Williams' Carter Merecki, before subsequently dropping a 3-0 decision to NYU's Raymond Jazikoff in the championship bout.
Senior
Vinny Turano (Wantagh, N.Y.) ran rapid through the 141-lb. bracket, en route to a third-place showing.
He recorded consecutive 16-0 technical falls to start the day, and capped it off with back-to-back pins in the wrestlebacks. Those two falls came less than two minutes into the first period of each match.
In the 197-lb. competition, sophomore
Logan McGinn (Medford, N.Y.) added a fourth-place finish.
Despite losing his opening bout, McGinn reeled off four three straight victories in the consolation bracket to reach the third-place match. He won back-to-back decisions, and pinned New England's Jack Wagner in 3:59.
Sophomore
Monair McDonald (Roosevelt, N.Y.) had a strong effort on the mat in the heavyweight class. He pinned Conrad LaVoie of Rhode Island College in 1:32 and majored Mount Saint Vincent's Harryson Myrtil, 13-2.

Joe Patrovich and his LIU Post squad are back in action Saturday (Feb. 4), when they face Super Region I foes West Liberty University, Wheeling Jesuit University and Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, Pa.
