Brookville, N.Y. - Behind two goals from Julia Duffy (Oceanside, N.Y.), the No. 12 LIU Post women's soccer team topped No. 23 Mercy, 2-0, in a battle of nationally ranked teams at Pioneers Soccer Park on Wednesday afternoon. The win lifts the Pioneers to first place in the East Coast Conference standings with a 12-1-1 (5-0 ECC) record. Mercy falls to 12-2 (5-1 ECC) with the loss.
Duffy started the day's scoring in the 18th minute by hitting an empty net for her sixth goal of the year after getting the ball past the Mercy goalkeeper towards the top of the box. She would add her second goal of the day in the 77th minute off a feed from Alice Schonfeldt (Burtrask, Sweden) to ice the game for the Pioneers.
The LIU Post defense was outstanding on the afternoon, as well. The Pioneers held Mercy, who entered the game with the 18th ranked scoring offense in all of Division II, to only three shots (none of which were on goal) in the shutout.
The Pioneers now ride a nine game unbeaten streak into their next contest on Saturday against St. Thomas Aquinas on the road. Game time is set for 12:30 p.m.
