Brookville, N.Y. – The LIU Post women's volleyball team suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of ECC rival Molloy College inside the Pratt Center on Wednesday evening.
With the loss, the Pioneers slide to 21-4 (7-2 ECC) on the year, while the Lions improve to 18-4 (7-2 ECC).
An epic first set saw the Pioneers go up 20-18, but the Lions quickly knotted the set up at 21 before using a 4-1 run to earn the first-set 25-22 victory.
The second set featured a tightly contested match up, the Lions would lead by as much as four points (10-6) but it was the Pioneers who would take the second set by a 25-22 margin.
The Pioneers jumped to a 15-8 lead in the third set and led by as much as nine points (22-13) before earning the 25-16 victory. In the fourth set, with the score tied up at 24, Molloy capitalized on a kill and a Pioneers attacking error to win 26-24 and force a fifth set.
Tied 9-9, the Pioneers scooped up three points to pull ahead 12-9. LIU Post would come within one of the Lions, but in the end it was Molloy that won the final points to earn the 15-13 and 3-2 wins.
Rachel Londot led all players with 19 kills in a match that saw LIU post record 59 kills. Danielle Valenza contributed 12 kills and Kristin Bendy went for eight.
Kassie Akouri-Tejedor (24 assists) and Gulia Genna (24 assists) split setting duties for LIU Post and Indira Rojas (22 digs) and Valenza (17 digs) powered a defense that was credited with 84 digs.
