BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - Despite dropping a marathon opening set 29-31, the LIU Post volleyball team secured wins in the next three sets for the 3-1 victory over non-conference rival Adelphi on Tuesday night in the Pratt Recreation Center.
The Pioneers (15-3) picked up wins in the final three sets by scores of 25-21, 25-14, and 25-18.
Trailing one-set-to-none, the green and gold also saw itself behind 19-21 late in the second set and on the verge of dropping two in a row. A kill by junior outside hitter
Rachel Londot (Utica, Ohio) jump-started the 6-0 run to end the set for the Pioneers, which also highlighted another Londot kill, a pair by freshman middle hitter
Asiya Way (Denver, Colo.), and capped off by a service ace by junior setter
Giulia Genna (Rome, Italy).
LIU Post overwhelmed the Panthers (7-8) in the third set, jumping out to an 8-2 lead and closing the game by once again scoring the final six points after the score reflected 20-14 in favor of the home squad. This time, senior outside hitter
Danielle Valenza (Hauppauge, N.Y.) kicked off the run which once again included two Londot kills. The set point was smashed down by junior middle hitter
Elise Strange (Chesapeake, Va.).
In the fourth and final set, the only time the Pioneers trailed was at 0-1 and 0-2. The two sides traded points for a stretch, until, with the scoreboard reading 10-9 in favor of the home squad, LIU Post exploded for 11-consecutive scores to extend its lead to 21-9. The visitors followed by notching seven of the next eight points, but the lead was too much to overcome as Strange once again put the nail in the coffin with the set- and match-ending kill.
Londot led both squads in three categories on the night, including recording a double-double with 16 kills and 23 digs. She added a game-high five aces as well. The dynamic setting duo for the Pioneers, Genna and sophomore
Kassie Akouri-Tejedor (North Miami Beach, Fla.), each registered a double-double giving the Pioneers three on the night. Genna totaled 26 assists and 15 digs, while Akouri-Tejedor added 16 assists and 10 digs.
The Pioneers continue action in the Pratt Recreation Center over the weekend as they host ECC-foes Roberts Wesleyan and Daemen on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Both contests are set for noon starts.
