Two Pioneers Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Edges Out NYIT, 73-69

Brookville, NY| Riding a five-game win streak, the LIU Post women's basketball team upended the NYIT Bears at home on Wednesday afternoon.

The Basics

·        Final Score: LIU Post 73, NYIT 69

·        Records: LIU Post (7-4, 3-0), NYIT (6-4, 2-1)

·        Location: Brookville, NY – Pratt Recreation Center

·        LIU Post Starters: Turner (G), Hudson (G), Doyle (G), Moore (F), Patterson (F)

Turning Point

·        Sasha Patterson tallied four points with 2:24 remaining in the game to give the Pioneers a 69-67 that they would never relinquish.

How It Happened

·        Patterson rattled off eight of the hosts' first 11 points to pull out to an 11-3 lead at 6:57 in the first. However, the Bears would outscore LIU Post 20-12 to level the score 23-23 heading into the second.

·        In the next frame, the Pioneers jumped out to a six-point lead 30-24, but the Bears came back to take a 31-30 lead before ending the frame with a 6-0 to give NYIT the 46-40 lead at the half.

·        In the third quarter, back-to-back layups by Maia Hood halfway through the period kept NYIT afloat, holding a 59-52 lead going into the final frame.

·        Down for most of the fourth, Kylie Garret buried two clutch free throws with 3:38 remaining and Patterson scored a lights-out six of LIU Post's final eight points to ice the game, leading to a 73-69 triumph.

For the Pioneers

·        Hudson served up five dimes and captured a steal and a block.

·        Patterson went 11-of-14 for 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds.  

·        Garrett was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe and dropped 14 points in the contest.

Inside the Box Score

·        LIU Post led in second-chance points (14-8) despite being outrebounded 36-33.

·        Both squads were cold from deep with the Pioneers shooting 26.7% 3FG as opposed to NYIT's 15.8%.
