BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Apr. 10, 2017) - On Monday, the LIU Post baseball team dropped a tightly-contested 6-5 decision to East Coast Conference foe University of Bridgeport at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

Tied 2-2 after four innings of play, the Pioneers (14-13, 6-4 ECC) broke through for three runs in the top of the fifth to grab a 5-2 advantage.

Following back-to-back singles to open the frame, freshman designated hitter Zach Fritz (East Meadow, N.Y.) launched a go-ahead three-run homer for his first collegiate roundtripper.

However, the Purple Knights (12-13, 7-5 ECC) rallied with a pair of runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth to take the lead for good.

In the sixth, senior first baseman Dave Egeland (Toms River, N.J.) and junior catcher Daren Grabowski (Berlin, Conn.) each delivered an RBI single to close the gap to 5-4.

Then, in the eighth, junior outfielder Isaiah Rivera (Newington, Conn.) lined a two-RBI single to put the hosts in front.

The visitors had an opportunity to even the score in the ninth, but grounded out in back-to-back at-bats with the tying run on second to end the game.

Freshman pitcher Mike Stiles (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) was saddled with the loss in the decision. He gave up two hits, two runs and one walk and fanned one in an inning of relief.

Head Coach Mike Gaffney and his LIU Post squad are back in action Wednesday (Apr. 12), when they host East Stroudsburg University in a non-conference showdown at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville, N.Y. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
